Hot Wheels: The 2008 Porsche Cayenne
Porsche has long set the standard for performance and prestige in a competitive industry, and the 2008 Cayenne sport utility vehicle is true to its lineage among the world’s finest automobiles. Recently making their debut at the North American International Auto Show, the Cayenne, Cayenne S, and Cayenne Turbo feature a dramatic new headlight design and wide, streamlined body accented by broad wheel arches.
With newly sculpted sheetmetal, which affirms the Cayenne’s enhanced technical features, this second generation Porsche SUV delivers all the comfort and luxury which discriminating consumers have come to expect. A power rear lift gate is standard on all models, while larger 21-inch wheels, a rail-mounted cargo management system, and XM satellite radio are preferred options. Another outstanding option is Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control, with active anti-roll bars that almost completely offset body roll in turns, improving handling, comfort and active safety while on the road, as well as enhance off-pavement traction.
A standard and push-button Sports mode is available with each of the three high performance Cayenne engines. A rollover sensor complements the Cayenne’s six standard airbags. This feature triggers belt latch tensioners and curtain airbags during emergency situations, helping to reduce the risk of injury for all passengers during a rollover.
New on the 2008 Cayenne are Dynamic Curve Lights, which improve the driver’s ability to see clearly while driving at night on dark, winding roads. The Dynamic Curve Lights system is standard on the Cayenne Turbo and optional on other models. Standard on all Cayenne models is Porsche Stability Management (PSM), which includes such functions as pre-loading of the braking system when needed, new Trailer Stability Control, and an off-road anti-lock braking system (ABS).
In the 2008 Cayenne, safety and performance go hand in hand. In the standard Cayenne, a 3.6-liter V6 engine delivers 290 horsepower  and is priced at $43,400. The Cayenne S is powered by a 4.8-liter V8 capable of producing 385 horsepower and carries a pricetag of $57,900. The Cayenne Turbo lists at $93,700, and its twin turbo-charged 4.8-liter V8 reaches 500 horsepower, roaring from zero to 60 miles per hour in a mere 4.9 seconds with a top test track speed of 171 miles per hour. Such high performance is not achieved at the expense of fuel economy. Enhanced engine injection technology and improved vehicle aerodynamics have indicated significant improvements in fuel efficiency during Porsche’s internal pre-production testing regimen.
The 2008 Cayenne carries five passengers in comfort, while towing a trailer or traversing difficult terrain in inclement weather. The exciting combination of a sports car’s speed and responsive handling is present on the driver’s demand. The visual appeal and superb performance of the 2008 Cayenne are unmistakably Porsche.
Introduced in January during a Porsche press conference at the Cobo Center in Detroit, the 2008 Porsche Cayenne may be seen and driven at Porsche of Chattanooga, which is located at Exit 7 off Interstate 75 on Lee Highway. For more information, call (423) 424-0500.
