Relaxed Recreation

For this rustic retreat, the goal presented to builder Tim Burns was to create a home that was comfortable and welcoming. The project, which began simply as plans for a large garage, morphed into a flawless full-time getaway thatโ€™s the perfect place to entertain family and friends.

A pine tongue and groove ceiling in the screened-in porch adds a luxe touch while pops of color come in through the furniture and accessories. Plenty of sink-in-your-seat furniture, fun pillows, and a patterned rug make this the ideal spot to throw a party. Concrete floors allow for easy upkeep.

Nature Meets Comfort

This home, built by Tim Burns of Burns Construction Company, has mountain stone and cedar beams that lend a natural look to the homeโ€™s exterior. The Hardie siding, painted a mossy green, allows the home to blend with its surroundings. At the back of the home, a screened-in porch makes for the perfect spot to enjoy relaxing pond views. A guest house and large garage flank the home. โ€œThe homeowners had their own vision. Our job was to make it happen,โ€ Burns says.

RelaxedRecreation_3Casual Functionality

Perimeter kitchen cabinetry is glazed and distressed to perfection in a rich cherry finish. An expansive center island creates a functional work station and casual dining spot, and has its own distinct flair thanks to distressed black paint. โ€œThey wanted their island to feel more like a piece of furniture,โ€ says Christy Forester, designer at Classic Cabinetry. โ€œIt has furniture legs and itโ€™s a freestanding piece.โ€ A matching cherry range hood and panel-front refrigerator and dishwasher allow appliances to disappear within the cabinetry. Spice pullouts on each side of the stove and built-in utensil dividers add functionality.

Setting the areaโ€™s rustic tone, a mountain stone fireplace rests in the center of this living room. Reclaimed barn wood is used on the mantel, and an antique box of ferns below brings a lively pop. Built-in cabinetry on either side of the fireplace displays dรฉcor from dried cotton to treasured family photos. Oak floors and 8-inch pine beams on the ceiling ensure that rustic woods are seen from floor to ceiling.

RelaxedRecreation_10Entering the home through the mudroom allows family and friends to drop off bags or mail on the built-in wall-to-wall countertop. โ€œThis is the command center of the home,โ€ says Forester. The built-in was originally a display piece in Classic Cabinetryโ€™s showroom and was chosen by the homeowners for their own home. Colorful wood planks on the mudroomโ€™s ceiling, reclaimed from an old home, draw the eye up and make creative use of a typically forgotten canvas.

The dining room keeps its dรฉcor relaxed and country-chic. A circle-based light fixture hangs from a rustic rope while a natural wood table features a crochet runner and candle clusters. White flowers rest in a distressed watering pail to finish the look. From the dining room, double doors lead to the side porch. โ€œThe homeowners like large gatherings so all their doors are 8-feet wide. They wanted the outside and inside to be combined when theyโ€™re entertaining,โ€ explains Burns.

A second floor recreation area has a barn aesthetic. With dark, distressed wood walls and a reclaimed metal ceiling, itโ€™s a cozy hideaway tucked upstairs. โ€œThe homeowners gathered the materials, like the metal used on the ceiling, from an old barn and brought it to the site themselves,โ€ Burns says.

A pool table can be enjoyed by guests, while views of the woodsy outdoors make the spot feel secluded and serene. โ€œWe decided to arch the ceiling this way because it matches the exterior slope,โ€ says Burns. โ€œIt gives the room a distinction from the rest of the house.โ€

Crisp, clean, light, and airy, the master bedroom uses layers of white and cream to accomplish a delicate look. Antique silver platters are grouped above the bed, while modern mirrors hang above each side table. A plush upholstered headboard, lush carpet, and light draperies complete the soothing space.

Maple cabinetry with an olive green stain and dark highlights reaches from wall to wall in this master bathroom. โ€œItโ€™s a long wall, so we wanted cabinetry that would look really pretty along it,โ€ says Forester. Silver hardware and granite countertops accessorize the cabinetry. On the opposite wall, a large walk-in shower and a contemporary, freestanding tub offer mod bathing options.
