In the quiet serenity of the mountains, this modern farmhouse by A. Perry Homes is flawlessly rooted in its setting, almost as if it were one with the trees surrounding it. In fact, the main goal for the build was to ensure that the home was designed around the local scenery. “The greatest challenge was ensuring the design fully capitalized on the property’s mountain views while still maintaining a functional floor plan and comfortable scale,” says Kent DeReus, architect and CEO. “Achieving that balance required careful site analysis, strategic window placement, and thoughtful organization of the living spaces. By carefully positioning major gathering spaces, outdoor living areas, and key architectural elements, we were able to maximize both the views and the overall livability of the home.”

Beautiful exterior of a modern farmhouse surrounded by trees

Blending with the scenery

Drawing from the mountain setting, the exterior color palette is comprised of soft white, wood accents, and natural stone, allowing the surrounding views to remain the focal point. Layered arches and multiple gables line the front of the ranch home, adding depth and dimension that are characteristic of Southern architecture.

“Elements such as the vertical board-and-batten siding, standing seam metal roofing, oversized front porch, stone detailing, and custom wood brackets reflect the traditional farmhouse design,” explains DeReus, “while the simplified forms, expansive windows, and open floor plan give it a more contemporary feel.”

Living room with stone fireplace and large floor to ceiling windows

Upon receiving a warm welcome, guests step into an open-concept living space and kitchen, where large windows line the perimeter and blur the line between the indoors and the great outdoors beyond.

“One of my favorite aspects of the home is how successfully it captures and celebrates the views,” DeReus says. “The large and transom windows throughout the family room fill the space with natural light and frame the surrounding landscape, almost like artwork.”

Reflecting the sunlight throughout the space, white walls and a matching coffered ceiling add architectural character. The built-in shelving provides both function and balance while maintaining a clean aesthetic. Warm, earthy tones envelop the floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, serving as a focal point that anchors the space and harmonizes with the wooden accents and leather furniture.

“As with many custom homes, coordinating the various architectural details and custom elements required close collaboration throughout the design and construction process, but that attention to detail is what ultimately gives the home its character.”

Large white kitchen with island and tile backsplash

Providing warmth and continuity, wide-plank wood flooring runs throughout the primary living spaces, including the kitchen. Custom floor-to-ceiling cabinetry frames the space, with glass-front cabinets that display a collection of chintz-style pottery and china. Tasteful bursts of blue continue throughout the kitchen, accenting the backsplash and framed tile mural. In the center, a contrasting navy blue island is crowned with white quartz, matching the surrounding countertops. Overhead, a stained wood range hood completes the layered and highly functional space, making it feel both elegant and approachable.

Rounding out the space, a cozy dining area is backdropped by matching blue cabinets and a series of picture windows. A simple chandelier provides warm light in the evenings, harmonizing with the two cage pendant lights above the island. After dinner, guests need only to pass through the sliding glass doors to enter a luxurious outdoor terrace with a fully equipped kitchen, dining set, and lounging area. Natural stone wainscoting with warm variation flows along the kitchen and entertainment walls, while rich wooden planks line the ceiling. Two matte black outdoor ceiling fans keep the space cool and comfortable, while recessed lighting allows the homeowners to enjoy the space long after sunset.

Spacious lounging patio porch

Feeling more like a portal to a woodland haven than part of the terrace, the spacious lounging area invites guests to relax and soak in the sounds of nature. Two plush swivel chairs and an opulent patio sofa provide the perfect combination of luxury and comfort. Following the railing down the steps, a large deck stretches the length of the backyard. With ample space to lounge, grill, garden, and more, the deck provides a spectacular, sweeping view of the mountainside.

“I think this home reflects many of the priorities we see in residential design today, but in a way that feels timeless rather than trendy,” DeReus concludes. “We’re increasingly seeing a want for flexible gathering spaces, stronger connections to the outdoors, abundant natural light, and homes that feel both beautiful and highly functional. This home achieves that by celebrating its setting, supporting the way people live today, and maintaining a sense of permanence and authenticity.”
