A Charming Revival

Feature Home

This turn-of-the-century home invites guests to step back into the year 1911 and stay a while. In a mixed revival of the Aesthetic Movement and Arts and Crafts Movement, the full-scale remodel with design by Michelle Workman Interiors seamlessly blends functional modern elements with the timelessness of art for art’s sake. The task turned out to be no simple feat, as the first walkthrough revealed that the house’s originality and character had been erased. “It had undergone a renovation at some point that had stripped it of all the character from its origin,” Workman recalls. “So, we brought the entire house down to the studs, and I began research on what authentic elements to incorporate to bring back that flavor and sense of age without making it look dated.”

Green walled Living room with tiled fireplace

A Heritage Masterpiece

Throughout the living room, historical greens wash the walls, with accents of tan, blue, and dusty coral incorporated through both the floral wallpaper and textured fabrics. With eclectic leather furniture arranged around the focal point of the room, guests naturally gravitate toward the stunning fireplace. Encased with soft-hued zellige tile that echoes the preferred style of the early 1900s, the fireplace’s antique Ernest Batchelder tile sits center stage and is as old as the house itself, acting as a conduit to the past. The eye is drawn up to a vibrant coffered mahogany ceiling with flush-mount ceiling lights and a hanging fabric pendant lantern.

Exiting the room, two unique doorways highlight the house’s personalized character. “I am most proud of the keyhole opening between the living room and kitchen,” says Workman, “as well as the custom-built cabinetry that conceals a hidden doorway to the primary bedroom.”

Kitchen with hardwood floors and a keyhole entrance to the living room

Cabinetry: Classic Cabinetry

Entering the kitchen, guests are instantly greeted by the rustic, high-variation hardwood flooring that the owners sourced from reclaimed barnwood. Framing the kitchen’s perimeter, custom cabinetry in Ocean Jade Classic with a modernized craftsman door style pairs perfectly with the Alga Green countertops and metallic bronze subway tile backsplash. While cooking, the large, freestanding range stove with gas burners gives the homeowners the ability to instantly adjust from high heat to a gentle simmer, while a stainless-steel range hood protects the crisp vaulted ceiling. Sitting front and center, the matching jade island – complete with a cozy alcove for cookbooks and four high-top chairs – is crowned with a massive mahogany chopping block that provides ample room for both food prep and intimate meals.

Hallway with brim trim and barnwood flooring

The barnwood flooring flows through the colonnade hallway with custom cabinetry to the primary suite – a safe haven of comfort and luxury. The trim around the windows and doorways – painted in Bunglehouse Blue by Arts & Crafts – calls to the blue in the homeowner’s art collection, including a vibrant lake scene with floating magnolias. Vintage George Kovacs table lamps in chrome and bronze sit atop mid-century modern nightstands finished in burl wood veneer. The velvet emerald trellised headboard fills out the center wall, with a matching rosette accent pillow and chunky tweed duvet. Rounding out the room’s perfectly balanced color palette, splashes of fawn spread from the accent pillows to the ecru curtains.

“There are a lot of period homes out there that have been stripped of their originality, and new homes are being built to look old, but both have a hard time achieving an authentic look. I think the elements brought to life in this home have brought about a true revival of its time, without looking fussy, old, or dated.” – Michelle Workman, Michelle Workman Interiors

Countertops: Stone Source Inc.

Peonies, hydrangeas, sweet peas, garden snakes, and hummingbirds cascade across the powder room’s wallpaper. The wallpaper’s color palette perfectly complements the homeowner’s vibrant hummingbird oil painting. A modern brass wall sconce features a clean, minimal silhouette that counterbalances the gilded Baroque-style mirror. But the pièce de résistance in this powder room is the Cristalo Pink, semi-translucent stone countertop perched atop a sleek, navy vanity.

Hallway with Arches

Alcove sitting area with blue walls

In the cozy alcove within the kitchen, a watery blue plush seat and Morrison Company patterned throw pillows play perfectly with the counter stool fabric. The owners can bask in the warm, natural light provided by the morning sun, or pull the pleated Roman shades for a calmer setting. In the evenings, an art nouveau lamp provides soft, warm light for reading and leisure. From the arched doorways to the glowing trinity of brass globe flush mount lights, the home is the perfect blend of historical magic and modern livability. Workman says, “The home incorporates the eclectic aesthetic of the homeowners in both form and function,” and she concludes, “The entire house truly is a love letter to the early 1900s.”
