Brown Sugar Salsa Burger Recipe

Burgers with a Twist

Nothing says the South quite like a perfectly grilled burger. While a classic bun, patty, and mayo combination is always a good idea, sometimes a unique ingredient or preparation method can take a burger to the next level. Here, a local gentleman shares his favorite twist on a classic burger and what makes it special.

“The brown sugar salsa burger came from a recipe that my Aunt Theresa introduced to my wife and me more than 20 years ago. At the time, we were raising our three sons and doing our best to provide great family meals while staying within a tight budget. Over the years, they have become one of our favorite and most requested meals. Not only are they easy to prepare, but they are also incredibly flavorful and satisfying. This burger has been a staple at countless family dinners and has become a go-to meal whenever we host friends and guests. More than just a recipe, it has become a family tradition that brings people together around the table.” -Bob Nolan

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs. 80/20 ground beef
  • 1 cup Mateo’s salsa
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 8 slices American cheese
  • 1 white onion thickly sliced, to taste
  • 1 heirloom tomato sliced, to taste
  • Lettuce to taste
  • 8 brioche hamburger buns
  • Duke’s mayonnaise to taste
  • Mustard to taste
  • Grillo’s pickle slices to taste

Instructions

  • Mix the ground beef, salsa, and brown sugar together, then form into ¼ lb. patties. (The amount of salsa and sugar can be adjusted as needed to achieve the right consistency. Just make sure the patties aren’t too loose or they’ll fall apart.)
  • Grill your patties on a Blackstone griddle until they reach your preferred doneness.
  • Right before you remove the patties from the grill, add the cheese and allow it to melt.
  • Chop your veggies.
  • Grab a bun, and build each burger to your liking with your favorite toppings. Bon appétit!
