Hilltop Estate

Feature Home

Perched on a scenic hilltop, surrounded by peaceful wooded views, this stunning European-inspired rebuild by Croxall Residential has beautifully transformed the original ranch-style home into an elegant three-story retreat for the homeowners and their family. “The home speaks strongly to the idea of value, not simply in terms of cost, but in how resources are intentionally allocated,” says builder Hayden Croxall. “One of the clearest examples of this was the intentional decision to retain and reinforce portions of the existing foundation system, which allowed significant budget savings while still meeting the performance standards and timeless design we expect our homes to achieve.” The perfect blend of old-world character and modern detailing, the home is ideal for day-to-day living with a touch of luxury.

Outdoor Connectivity

Composed of mottled brick with steep gables, asymmetrical rooflines, and a soft arched entry, the home’s exterior leans European in character, while the large windows and restrained ornamentation help to modernize the design. Following the motif to the backyard, a spacious outdoor living space with a custom timber frame truss system, fireplace, and fully-integrated outdoor kitchen immerses guests in the surrounding landscape. With ample seating, the homeowners can lounge around the fireplace, sit at the large wooden plank table, or at the bar with a folding window that provides direct access to the main kitchen. “Architecturally, the outdoor living space became one of the defining focal points of the home,” Croxall says. “Designed as a true extension of the primary living and dining spaces, and positioned against the heavily wooded backdrop, the entire composition creates a layered transition that allows the home to feel grounded within its site, rather than simply placed upon it.”

To subtly reflect the hilltop scenery, the interior’s neutral palette is accented with pops of greens and blues. To the right of the entrance, an intimate dining space awaits. Backdropped by four windows, the room is flooded with natural light. When the floor-to-ceiling curtains are drawn, a transitional chandelier with tapered shades and two blue ceramic lamps provide warm lighting for a relaxing meal. A farmhouse table with turned-pedestal legs and six matching wood and batten chairs complement the warmth of the white oak floors. Adding dimension, a large white vanity with fluted panel doors provides counter space for plant life, while a golden, soft arched mirror pays homage to the home’s architecture.

“From circulation patterns to sightlines, gathering spaces, and transitions between rooms, the home was intentionally designed to facilitate community, and connection within the family.”
– Hayden Croxall, Croxall Residential

The white oak flooring flows throughout the open-concept kitchen and living space, its warm-variation planks broken up by an expansive rug. Lavish cream couches with floral accent pillows, green swivel loungers, and slate blue ottomans surround a tiered coffee table. Set to age gracefully over time, a natural stone and subway tile fireplace is accented with a sleek mantel and scenery-changing frame. Two inset, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves with cylindrical sconces sit on either side, proudly displaying the homeowner’s vibrant collection of souvenirs. Encouraging indoor-outdoor connectivity, six radiant windows adorn the room with afternoon light, while the oversized transoms and large sliding glass doors open onto the back deck.

Complementing the floor-to-ceiling white cabinetry, natural marble countertops cover the kitchen’s surfaces, with a matching overhang island that tidily houses five high-back barstools. “The designer, Catherine Fore, often speaks about the enduring nature of marble and natural stone, pointing to historic architecture throughout Europe – particularly in places like Italy – where marble has remained beautiful for centuries,” says Croxall. Harmonizing with the cabinet hardware, two golden pendant lights hang overhead and provide a tasteful pop of color across the kitchen. Gliding through the French doors, a cool green pantry with abundant storage and an additional sink await. With a cylindrical pendant light, cabinet accent lighting, and a casement window, the intimate space feels bright and airy.

In the primary bedroom, ceramic lamps and pops of blue floral continue throughout the décor, backdropped by a tan tufted headboard. Exploring the en suite, a his-and-her-style vanity stretches across the exterior wall and is divided with additional cabinetry for storage. White marble tile with gray graining leads to the walk-in shower, where matching hex tile acts as the foundation for the walls and two inset shelves enveloped in subway tile. The stainless-steel shower accessories echo the silver wall sconces and cabinetry hardware.
