JHMโ€™s History and Local Roots

JHM Certified Public Accountants traces its roots back to 1977, when Dan Johnson and Harrison Hickey โ€“ experienced CPAs who had honed their skills at Bernard Stone & Co. โ€“ formed the firm of Johnson and Hickey.

Over the years, more partners were introduced to the practice, including Finley Moses, Pat Murchison, and Jeff Durham. In 1982, the firm name was officially changed to Johnson, Hickey & Murchison โ€“ widely known in the community as JHM.

From the beginning, the firm specialized in serving the construction sector, with many partners bringing decades of local industry expertise. Many of the firmโ€™s founders had ties to the Chattanooga construction scene, working with companies like H.E. Collins Construction, Independent Construction (later EMJ), and Bencor, laying a foundation that continues to influence JHM today.

At the same time, Johnson and Hickeyโ€™s commitment to civic service helped establish JHMโ€™s longstanding focus on nonprofits and community support, further cementing its reputation as a trusted partner and community leader in the greater Chattanooga area.

Core Values and Company Culture

At JHM, the firm is built on a foundation of care, collaboration, and integrity, fostering an environment where both employees and clients feel valued.

“The culture and care at JHM goes beyond the walls of the office, whether it’s caring for staff’s lives, helping those in need, or being invested in the well-being of the community and team,โ€ shares Kenzie Hulling, marketing strategist at JHM. โ€œIn 2024, I experienced support from two wonderful staff members who helped me outside of the office during a time when I needed it most, and it truly set me up for success.โ€

This dedication to people translates directly into the firmโ€™s work with clients, creating relationships that are built on trust, responsiveness, and a shared commitment to success. JHMโ€™s core values arenโ€™t just statements โ€“ theyโ€™re reflected in everyday interactions and long-term client partnerships.

โ€œFinding a company that cares for its staff and culture in the way JHM does is a rare, priceless find,โ€ says Huling.

Community Involvement and Impact

JHMโ€™s commitment to community extends far beyond accounting services. From the firmโ€™s early days, the founders have been actively involved in several important local nonprofits, helping to shape organizations that strengthen the Chattanooga area.

Today, JHM continues that tradition, supporting causes that improve the well-being of residents and businesses alike, from sponsoring local events, like Orange Grove Centerโ€™s annual golf tournament, to hosting food drives benefiting families in Chattanooga and Cleveland. Whether through volunteer work, sponsorships, or hands-on assistance, the firm demonstrates a genuine dedication to giving back, ensuring that its impact is felt both inside and outside the office.

Growth and Future Plans

As JHM looks to the future, expansion remains a key focus. The firm is building a new office at 650 25th St. NW, Suite 300, in Cleveland, cementing its presence and investment in the local community.

This growth reflects a broader commitment to serving clients with enhanced resources, innovative solutions, and continued expertise. By combining a strong local presence with a vision for long-term development, JHM is poised to remain a trusted partner for individuals, businesses, and nonprofits across the region for years to come.

โ€œAll of us at JHM thank our clients for their continued trust in us as we continue to grow and expand our services to better serve their needs,โ€ finishes Huling.
