Living Areas: Swing Away

Nature’s Aesthetic
Floral motifs on the pillows and in the circular area rug, along with green plants, provide the alcove with an outdoor garden feel. Casements windows can be opened to let in fresh air.

At the top of the stairs, a narrow hallway opens to reveal this bright and intimate space, almost insisting that you come and sit for awhile. Three terraced white oak steps lead up to the alcove, mirroring the circular steps in the foyer below. Rather than going with fixed seating, the owner decided to install a swing which hangs from a beam above. A duvet covers the seat and ample decorative pillows in varying sizes and shapes line the back. The fan above can provide a nice breeze. Three central casement windows behind the swing, a round window above, and triangular windows on either side make the outdoors part of the space. The windows, left untreated, allow ample natural light to flood the alcove.
