“First, focus on the bones of the house – the parts that would be extremely difficult to modify once the home is completed. I recommend a well-planned drainage system, using hard, pre-drilled piping bedded in gravel, and gravel curtains against relevant foundation walls prior to any dirt backfill. Next, when the home is in framing, I recommend insulated window and door headers, open T-walls, and California corners to provide proper insulation value in some of the most common spots for energy loss. Lastly, I recommend an upgraded air-sealing package to the envelope of the home. In Chattanooga’s Climate Zone 4, properly air-sealing and ventilating a home adds tremendous long-term efficiency gains.
