Perfecting a Picnic Spread

By Ali Lemmons

What better way to enjoy the spring weather than dining al fresco? If you’ve already found the perfect location, and the right company, all that’s left to prepare is the picnic fare. Here, we share a few tips for creating a top-notch picnic spread, from choosing the right foods to packing them properly. So, grab your basket and blanket, and get ready to enjoy the sunshine!

Making Your Menu

While picnic fare can be as elevated or as casual as you prefer, the best picnic foods share three similarities: they’re delicious, easy to transport, and mess-free.

Finger foods are a picnic staple as they eliminate the need for plates and utensils, meaning less waste and less to pack. Plus, they’re easier to eat while you’re enjoying the great outdoors. Popular finger food options for picnics include charcuterie boards, with a variety of meats, cheeses, breads, and jellies; wraps and pinwheels, cut into easy-to-eat portions; and mess-free desserts, like lemon bars, cookies, and brownies.

To add to the spring flair of your picnic, opt for fresh and seasonal produce in your spread. Pack spring fruits, like strawberries, pineapple, and mango; vegetables and dips, such as carrots and hummus; or sandwiches with tomatoes, avocado, chickpeas, and other garden-fresh ingredients.

Sips & Refreshments

As you’re out relaxing in the sun, it’s important to stay hydrated. While water will certainly suffice, elevate your beverage by infusing it with cucumber, mint, or lemon and orange slices for a light, refreshing flavor. Lemonade and sparkling juices are also great options for those craving something sweeter.

As for libations, a seltzer, crisp white wine, or light rosé are the perfect complement to any picnic menu. Just remember to pack your corkscrew!

Pack It Properly

Nothing will ruin your perfect picnic like crushed, soggy, or spoiled food. Invest in a classic picnic basket, sturdy cooler, or insulated tote to keep your fare in tip top shape as you head to your location. Pack delicate food items, like fruit and desserts, in rigid, reusable containers to prevent squishing, and make sure to place heavier items at the bottom of your carrier.

Finishing Touches

While the food may be the star of the show, no picnic is complete without the perfect ambience. Bring a portable speaker to enjoy some relaxing tunes or pack your party’s favorite board or card games for leisurely entertainment. As for décor, a bouquet of flowers can add effortless color and charm to your setup.

PicnicExtra Tips for an Effortless Picnic

• Think Outside the Park: While lovely, the park isn’t the only place to have a picnic. Consider heading to the mountaintop, alongside a lake or river, or to a nearby hiking trail to enjoy scenic views while you indulge.

• Banish the Bugs: Running into bugs is inevitable this time of year, but it doesn’t have to ruin your picnic. Make sure to pack bug spray and food covers to keep your meal pest-free.

• Choose Comfort: For added comfort, pack extra blankets and pillows to make your stay more enjoyable. Choose blankets with a waterproof underside to avoid damp grass or unexpected spills from seeping through.
