Change Out Textiles

A simple way to breathe new life into a tired room is to change out textiles. If you really want to keep things fresh, consider swapping these items out seasonally. For example, at the end of winter, pack away the faux fur and velvet and introduce linen pillows and some jute or colorful throw rugs. You want your home to feel as if you are on vacation, so use materials that evoke those feelings. If you’re dreaming of Greece when the weather turns warm, incorporate natural elements like seagrass rugs, white linens, and soft touches of blue.

Replace Your Accents

The quickest way to update a room is a new paint color, whether you do one accent wall or the whole room. You can also change the space with a new, fun rug, which adds a pop of color. And replace your old throw pillows with some new ones. You can still use the same colors, but a newer version or a light shade will give you a refresh. In your dining room or kitchen, change your centerpieces. Add a big piece of glass or a collection of glass.

Select the Perfect Hue

If you are looking to update a current space, an easy way to accomplish a tremendous change while only using a small portion of the budget is to use paint. Few things like paint selections have the power to change the way we see the shape and size of a room design – and even how we feel when in the space. The paint hues you choose should add to the overall look, as well as complement your floor surfaces, backsplash designs, and the always important, and so often overlooked, lighting choices. Armed with the right tools, you can use paint colors to transform a room.

Replace Your Lighting

A simple way to update a room in your home is to replace existing light bulbs with LEDs. Whether your home is older or newly built, LEDs can enhance the atmosphere of any room. Today, LEDs are available in many different types, shapes, and sizes. They are offered in clear or frosted, and a popular shape is an Edison. Numerous fixtures have integrated LEDs and are available in traditional and contemporary styles. Whatever your objective, style, or budget, LED lighting is one of the most effective ways to update any room in your home.

Pick New Artwork

To update a room, you can pick new artwork or switch out the frames you use. You might consider canvas art – unframed canvases and contemporary art are everywhere right now. Framed pictures are more contemporary-looking now, with smaller, thin frames. It will give your space a more modern feel. Pillows are another easy aspect to change. Incorporate a geometric design for new toss pillows, in various sizes, for an easy, effective change. Draperies and rugs, of course, complete a room. I’m seeing drapery panels on smaller, French rods; changing your window treatments will definitely give your room a refresh.

Accessorize with Color

The easiest way to restyle a room would probably be with a paint color. Benjamin Moore’s paint color of the year, Metropolitan AF-690, is a quiet, subtle gray that allows you to accessorize with many different colors. So add panache with bright and daring color through fun pillows, colored glass lamps, or with a new color-filled rug. Thibaut’s Honshu print, available in fabric and wallpaper, would be a great start, adding vibrant color and a fun design to any room!

Switch out Shades

Updating your window coverings is a quick and easy way to refresh the look of any room. This can be done with changing out a few components. First, take down those swags and jabots and replace with a woven wood shade and neutral drapery side panels. Second, get rid of your operating cords and chains – modernize your windows by using smart, Wi-Fi-controlled shades. Why not lay in bed and tell Alexa or Google to lower your shades for you?

Focus on Furniture

Focus on the furniture first. Move it around a little and shake up your view. Then, consider a new, large piece of art to draw attention. In a smaller room, this will actually make the room feel more open, particularly if you choose a piece that draws you in visually. Keep your rugs neutral, so your eye is drawn upward and to your colored accent pieces. Use colorful accessories, but only a few, larger pieces. These colors can be picked up in pillows, plants, and new lamps. If your room fees cold, warm it up by adding some side panel drapes to your windows. For smaller rooms, keep the fabric color close to your wall color, and make them as tall as you can without towering over the window height. It will make your ceiling feel taller, while giving your room a cozy feeling.

Paint Your Ceiling

You can really make an impact on your space by rearranging furniture that you already own, adding a fresh coat of paint (try “jewel-boxing” the space and paint the ceiling, trim, and walls all the same color!), adding new throw pillows for a pop of color, and moving around artwork to give it a new vibe.

make small changes

You can always change your paint color – that is the most economical way to change a room. Paint is a large part of the total color scheme and not too expensive to change. Not a painter? You might consider changing one wall to create a focal point. Just make sure your new color balances well with your décor. The next element is the rug. Changing your area rug can make a huge difference in the style and look of your room. If you want to select new furniture, keep balance in mind again. You don’t want one piece to be a completely different color or a different style. Grandma’s antiques with one very contemporary piece will not work. However, grandma’s antiques with three or four contemporary pieces will look smashing!
