Who doesn’t love a good portable meal? Handheld menu items – from sandwiches to burgers to hot dogs and beyond – are beloved and multipurpose. Whether you’re layering breakfast meats, assembling an on-the-go lunch, or adding some simplicity to a sit-down dinner, handhelds are there to pack a flavorful punch. Here, local restaurants share some of their favorite handheld staples and what makes them special.

The combination of ingredients may seem odd at first, but the flavors work so well together. It epitomizes what we try to do at GOOD DOG: Taking something classic, fun, and nostalgic like hot dogs and finding new and inventive ways to highlight their deliciousness. Ingredients

For GOOD DOG Garlic Herb Cream Cheese:
  • 8 oz. cream cheese, softened
  • 2 Tbsp. salted butter, softened
  • 2 Tbsp. sour cream
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 Tbsp. fresh parsley, minced
  • 1 Tbsp. fresh rosemary, minced
For GOOD DOG Perfect Pesto:
  • ¼ cup fresh arugula
  • ¾ cup fresh basil leaves, stems removed
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • ½ cup walnuts
  • ½ cup olive oil
  • 5 oz. grated Parmesan
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
For The Doggfather:
  • GOOD DOG Garlic Herb Cream Cheese
  • GOOD DOG Perfect Pesto
  • ¼ yellow onion, sliced into ¼-inch strips
  • ¼ green bell pepper, halved, seeded, and sliced into ¼-inch strips
  • ¼ (12 oz.) jar roasted red peppers, drained
  • ½ tsp. red wine vinegar
  • Salt and pepper, to taste 
  • ¼ Tbsp. olive oil
  • 1 all-beef natural casing hot dog (or a veggie dog of your choosing)
  • 1 large hot dog bun (bratwurst- or sausage-size buns are ideal)

Directions

For GOOD DOG Garlic Herb Cream Cheese:

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix thoroughly. Store in an airtight container in refrigerator if preparing ahead of time. Allow to soften for 30 minutes before use.

For GOOD DOG Perfect Pesto:

Combine arugula, basil, garlic, and walnuts into the bowl of a food processor and chop until finely cut. Once chopped, begin to slowly pour olive oil into the top of the food processor. You should end up with a smooth paste and an emulsified mixture. Turn off the motor. Add Parmesan, salt, and pepper. Pulse until combined.

For The Doggfather:

Prepare Garlic Herb Cream Cheese and Perfect Pesto. Can be made ahead and kept in the refrigerator for 5 days. Combine sliced peppers, onions, and drained roasted red peppers in a large bowl and season with red wine vinegar, salt, and pepper, then set aside. Set a large flat-bottom skillet or griddle on medium heat. Add olive oil to pan, then add in the peppers and onion. Cook until slightly charred and softened. Remove from pan. Return pan to medium heat and add hot dog. Cook, turning occasionally, around 3-4 minutes per side. Spread one side of each bun with Garlic Herb Cream Cheese and place the hot dog on top. Spread Perfect Pesto along the hot dog, then top with the peppers and onion.
